If you don't know what the VMA's are, then you shouldn't read this post. If you do know what they are, please continue to read as I predict the winners.... I'll give you all the contenders and then my most humble opinion. :)
Breakthrough Video:
Eminem for "Mosh" - - Gorillaz for "Feel Good, Inc." - - Missy Elliot for "Lose Control" - - Sarah McLachlan for "World On Fire" - - U2 for "Vertigo"
Now, I would really love to see Sarah walk away with this one. Her video has a message that could only be brought to us in such an ironic and intelligent way as this. But who are we kidding, when has MTV ever been intelligent? So, it's either Eminem for his politically charged song and video OR Missy (but that's only because all her videos are ridiculously funky).
MTV2 Award:
Akon for "Locked Up" - - The Bravery for "An Honest Mistake" - - Daddy Yankee for "Gasoline" - - Fall Out Boy for "Sugar, We're Going Down" - - Mike Jones for "Still Trippin" - - My Chemical Romance for "Helena"
This is one where the viewers get to vote. I voted for The Bravery because of the video's concept and the energy of the music. I believe it to be original. Who knows what everyone else will pick? Hopefully not Daddy Yankee. That song is nothing if not repetitive and annoying!
Best New Artist:
Ciara - - The Game - - John Legend - - The Killers - - My Chemical Romance
I truly hope that The Killers win this one, but I could see Ciara walking away with it. She has Missy in her boat and the grooves to match any hot mama at the club.
Best Pop Video:
Ashlee Simpson for "Pieces of Me" - - Gwen Stefani for "Hollaback Girl" - - Jesse McCartney for "Beautiful Soul" - - Kelly Clarkson for "Since You've Been Gone" - - Lindsay Lohan for "Rumors"
Ashlee has had a super year and has already won some awards (Billboard, etc.), but she's got tough competition from Gwen and Kelly. Kelly Clarkson has had even more success with this album than her first, which shows her growth. I can't complain. She deserves an award.
Best Rock Video:
Foo Fighters for "Best of You" - - Green Day for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" - - The Killers for "Mr. Brightside" - - My Chemical Romance for "Helena" - - Weezer for "Beverly Hills"
Green Day is hot right now and this song was huge! But as a video, not so great. Holiday was much better and much more rock. Foo Fighters always put in a good performance andthis video is no exception, but they've got their Grammy's. I am routing for The Killers.
Best Dance Video:
Ciara for "1,2 Step" - - Destiny's Child for "Lose My Breath" - - Jennifer Lopez for "Get it Right" - - Missy Elliot for "Lose Control" - - Shakira for "La Tortura"
Tough category. And I'm not being sarcastic about that. As much as I abhor J.Lo, she's got an ear for hooks. Shakira can always shake her groove thang and this video is all about her body. But I'm thinking Ciara is winning this one. The song, video and overall energy is enough for me.
Best HipHop Video:
Common for "Go" - - Kanye West for "Jesus Walks" - - Missy Elliot for "Lose Control" - - Nas for "Bridging the Gap" - - Snoop Dogg for "Drop it Like it's Hot"
Kanye is the man, winning Grammy's and producing the hell out of other stars. But this video is greater than Best HipHop. So, I'm going to have to side with Nas. This song is about the roots of music for him and to bring his father into the mix is what HipHop is all about. If this video doesn't win, I wouldn't be surprised to see Snoop and Pharell up on the podium.
Best RandB Video:
Alicia Keys for "Karma" - - Ciara for "Oh" - - John Legend for "Ordinary People" - - Mariah Carey for "We Belong Together" - - Usher for "Caught Up"!
Mariah, Mariah, Mariah. There's no reason why she won't win this category. Unless of course, people want to give it to the person who deserves it the most. That would be John Legend. He is truly talented. But I'm sure everyone will want to encourage Mariah with her comeback of sorts, even if her music is lacking.
Best Rap Video:
Eminem for "Just Lose It" - - The Game for "Hate it or Love it" - - Ludacris for "Number One Spot" - - T.I. for "You don't know me" - - Ying Yang Twins for "Wait"
I have never heard of three of these songs. So, let's cut them loose. The battle is between Eminem and Ludacris. And I only hope that Ludacris wins, because this video was at the top of TRL for weeks and his latest work is much more stylish and fluid.
Best Group Video:
Black Eyed Peas for "Don't Phunk with my Heart" - - Destiny's Child for "Soldier" - - Green Day for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" - - The Killers for "Mr. Brightside" - - U2 for "Vertigo"
All great candidates, but Green Day will sweep. Too bad, because Black Eyed Peas' video was funny and excellent.
Best Female Video:
Amerie for "1 Thing" - - Gwen Stefani for "Hollaback Girl" - - Kelly Clarkson for "Since You've Been Gone" - - Mariah Carey for "We Belong Together" - - Shakira for "La Tortura"
Ok, the best female would be Shakira. But we're talking about their music and videos. Pretty sure Mariah might win this one, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Kelly. You never know...
Best Male Video:
50 Cent for "Candy Shop" - - Beck for "E-Pro" - - John Legend for "Ordinary People" - - Kanye West for "Jesus Walks" - - Usher for "Caught Up"
Define male. Well, 50's videos have nearly naked women shaking and grinding like they're having sex with you. Ok, not male - - this is called male appeal. So, if we're being correct about this, Kanye should win. Darkhorse could be John Legend.
Best Video of the Year:
Coldplay for "Speed of Sound" - - Green Day for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" - - Gwen Stefani for "Hollaback Girl" - - Kanye West for "Jesus Walks" - - Snoop Dogg for "Drop it Like it's Hot"
Ok, how cool would it be if Snoop won this? I'm serious. In all fairness, Coldplay was nominated because of their clout. Notice they weren't nominated for any other category. Sorry guys, but you shouldn't win. Kanye should. Let's not forget Gwen's top-selling album, as well as Green Day's year of years. Three way tie!
And there you have it. I hope you disagree.
